六親總篇
《六親總篇》 夫六親者:父、母、兄弟、妻財、子、孫是也。 用日乾為主:正印正母;偏印偏母及祖父也;偏財是父,乃母之夫星也,亦為偏妻;正財為妻;偏財為妾,為父是也;比肩為兄弟姐妹也;七殺是男;正官是女;食神是男孫;傷官是女孫及祖母也。 婦人命取六親,與男命不同:取官星為夫星;七殺是偏夫;食神是男;傷官是女。 經云:"男取克乾為嗣,女取乾生為子息及奴婢也。" 年為祖上,月為父母伯叔兄弟門戶,日為妻妾己身。 且如六親受克何如?印綬見財,克母及祖母也;見比劫陽刃,克妻妾及父也;官殺多者,難為兄弟;傷官食神多,難為子息;梟印傷孫,克祖母也。 譬如:正印作合母不正;財作合妻不正;官作合女不正;偏財作合妾不正;比肩作合姊妹不正;傷官作合祖母不正;食神作合孫女不正。 假如甲日為主,見癸為母,見戊辰戌為父及妾,見己丑未午字,則與戊字相爭奪,又傷癸水,克母之義明矣;見甲寅字,克父及妾;見庚申字,主克兄姊也;見乙卯字克弟妹;見丙巳字克子女也;余仿此。此必以歲運見何字,則克何人;更將衝剋衰旺向背,將來者進,功成者退。兼有孤神寡宿,旬中有空亡者忌,二三反吉。 金空則鳴,火空則發,水空則流,此三者上吉;木空則朽,土空則崩,二者主凶。當以本生年起,克害無疑也。
The Six Relations (liuqin) are: father, mother, brothers, wife's wealth, children, and grandchildren. Using the Day Stem as master: the Direct Seal is the birth mother; the Indirect Seal is the stepmother and also the paternal grandfather. The Indirect Wealth is the father, being the mother's husband-star, and also serves as the secondary wife. The Direct Wealth is the wife. The Indirect Wealth is the concubine and the father. The Shoulder is brothers and sisters. The Seven Killings is the son. The Direct Officer is the daughter. The Food God is the grandson. The Hurting Officer is the granddaughter and also the paternal grandmother. For a woman's chart, the Six Relations are taken differently from a man's: the Officer star is the husband-star; the Seven Killings is the secondary husband; the Food God is the son; the Hurting Officer is the daughter. The classic says: 'For men, take what overcomes the Stem as heirs; for women, take what the Stem generates as children and servants.' The Year represents the ancestors. The Month represents the parents, paternal uncles, and siblings -- the household gate. The Day represents the wife or concubine and oneself. As for how the Six Relations are affected by overcoming: the Seal seeing Wealth harms the mother and grandmother. Seeing Shoulder, Rob Wealth, or Yang Blade harms the wife, concubine, and father. When Officer-Killings are many, brothers have difficulty. When Hurting Officer and Food God are many, children have difficulty. The Owl Seal injures grandchildren and harms the grandmother. For example: the Direct Seal forming a Combination means the mother is improper. Wealth forming a Combination means the wife is improper. The Officer forming a Combination means the daughter is improper. Indirect Wealth forming a Combination means the concubine is improper. Shoulder forming a Combination means siblings are improper. Hurting Officer forming a Combination means the grandmother is improper. Food God forming a Combination means the granddaughter is improper. Suppose Jia Day is the master: seeing Gui is the mother; seeing Wu-Chen-Xu is the father and concubine; seeing Ji-Chou-Wei-Wu means Ji competes with Wu for seizure, and further injures Gui Water -- the meaning of harming the mother is clear. Seeing Jia-Yin harms the father and concubine. Seeing Geng-Shen primarily harms elder brothers and sisters. Seeing Yi-Mao harms younger siblings. Seeing Bing-Si harms sons and daughters. The rest follow the same principle. One must determine which characters appear in the annual luck to know which person is harmed. Further examine the Clash, overcoming, Decline, and Strength, advancing and retreating. If the Solitary Spirit and Widowed Lodge are also present, and the decade has Emptiness, this is taboo -- but two or three instances reverse into auspiciousness. Metal in Emptiness rings. Fire in Emptiness blazes. Water in Emptiness flows -- these three are supremely auspicious. Wood in Emptiness rots. Earth in Emptiness collapses -- these two portend misfortune. One should calculate from the birth year: the overcoming and harming are without doubt.
The Six Relations (六親 liuqin) map the Ten Gods onto family relationships using the Day Stem as the reference point. The system creates an elaborate correspondence: what generates me (Seal) = mother; what I overcome (Wealth) = wife/father; what overcomes me (Officer/Killing) = children/authority; what I generate (Food/Hurting) = grandchildren; what is the same as me (Shoulder/Rob) = siblings.
The five elements in Emptiness (空亡) behave differently: Metal rings (like a bell), Fire blazes (fuel-free), Water flows (unrestricted) -- all positive. Wood rots (loses structure), Earth collapses (loses cohesion) -- both negative. This is a fundamental principle in Bazi analysis of Emptiness.

Verse: 'Dividing the Salary, one must injure the person who provides food; / Shoulder heaped upon Shoulder damages the stern parent. / Direct Wealth harms the mother; Indirect Wealth is the father; / Husband and wife in mutual punishment meet the Retreat Spirit. / Food God brings longevity, and the wife bears many sons; / Indirect Officer brings many daughters but few sons. / With strong Hurting Officer, the lineage is surely severed; / In the Mean, the Seal naturally brings glory to the Self.'
This mnemonic verse condenses the Six Relations system into eight lines for rapid memorization. Each line maps a Ten God to its familial effect.
On the Father
論父
《論父》 偏財是父,乃印綬之官星也。 如甲日以戊為父,再見甲寅字、或木局全、或臨死絕沖刑之地,主克父也;不然,主離異不睦、或疾病殘傷。若得庚字申字救,庶無大害。 如甲旺戊衰,亦主有疾少靠。 如戊臨生旺、貴人、天月德地,亦主有貴;更得丙丁生助,享父之福無窮。 如臨殺地,父死他鄉。 居衰敗受制之處、墓絕之地,主父平常,不得父力也。
The Indirect Wealth is the father, being the Officer star of the Seal. For example, Jia Day takes Wu as father. If one sees Jia-Yin, or if a complete Wood bureau, or if it reaches a place of Death, Extinction, Clash, or Punishment -- this primarily indicates harming the father. Otherwise, it means separation, discord, or illness and disability. If Geng or Shen appear to rescue, there may be no great harm. If Jia is strong and Wu is declining, this also indicates illness and little support from the father. If Wu reaches a place of generation and strength, with Noble Person, Heavenly Virtue, or Monthly Virtue, the father is also noble. If Bing-Ding additionally generate and assist, one enjoys the father's fortune without limit. If it reaches a Killing territory, the father dies in a distant land. If it occupies a place of Decline, Defeat, and subjugation, or the territories of Tomb and Extinction, the father is ordinary, and one does not gain the father's support.
The father is represented by Indirect Wealth (偏財) because the father is the mother's husband, and the Officer star of the Seal (mother) is the element that overcomes the Seal -- which is the Day Master's Wealth. For Jia (Wood) day masters, Wu (Earth) = Indirect Wealth = father.
On the Mother
論母
《論母》 正印者,乃生我之身也。 如甲日以癸為母,遇己丑未主克母;見多,主母嫁二夫。 一戊失地、或被克,主母傷前夫。 戊字受生、或印臨桃花沐浴,母有外情。 如印長生,主母慈淑壽長、益和子母。 如臨陽刃殺地、或值絕墓孤寡,主母不賢或有殘疾不睦。 須以理推,無不驗矣!
The Direct Seal is what gives birth to my body. For example, Jia Day takes Gui as mother. Encountering Ji-Chou-Wei indicates harming the mother. Seeing many of these indicates the mother marries a second husband. If one Wu loses its position or is overcome, the mother's previous husband is harmed. If Wu receives generation, or the Seal reaches the Peach Blossom or Bathing position, the mother has an outside affair. If the Seal is at Long Life, the mother is kind, virtuous, and long-lived, with harmonious mother-child relations. If it reaches the Yang Blade or Killing territory, or falls at Extinction, Tomb, or Solitary-Widowed, the mother is not virtuous, or has disability, or there is discord. Reason through it logically, and it will be verified without fail.
The mother is the Direct Seal (正印), the element that directly generates the Day Master. Conditions of the Seal in the chart -- its strength, position, and interactions -- are read as indicators of the mother's character, health, fidelity, and longevity.
On Siblings
論兄弟姊妹
《論兄弟姊妹》 比肩者,兄弟也。 且如,甲見甲為兄,乙為弟妹;寅卯亦然。 見庚則克兄,見辛則傷弟。 甲木旺相,兄姊爭財;甲乙寅卯既多,則兄弟姊妹奪財不和,爭鬥是非。 見己合甲,兄姊不正。 見庚,弟妹不正。 如見殺多,乙木得局,是殺合會乙木而傷甲;此兄不若弟之福,借弟之力而加恃。 甲木寅月,乙木受制,主兄旺弟衰。 其餘和順不睦,但以八字休旺死絕推之,無不應驗矣!
Shoulder is brothers and sisters. For example, Jia seeing Jia is the elder brother; Yi is the younger sibling. Yin and Mao work the same way. Seeing Geng harms the elder brother. Seeing Xin injures the younger sibling. If Jia Wood is strong and in phase, elder siblings compete for Wealth. If Jia, Yi, Yin, and Mao are already numerous, then brothers and sisters seize Wealth and quarrel, with disputes and conflict. Seeing Ji combining with Jia: the elder sibling is improper. Seeing Geng: the younger sibling is improper. If the Killings are many and Yi Wood obtains a bureau, the Killing combines and meets Yi Wood to injure Jia. The elder brother lacks the younger brother's fortune and borrows the younger brother's strength to sustain himself. Jia Wood in the Yin month: Yi Wood is controlled -- the elder sibling thrives while the younger declines. For the rest, whether harmonious or discordant, simply deduce from the eight characters' Rest, Strength, Death, and Extinction -- it will be verified without fail.
Siblings are read through Shoulder (比肩, same element and polarity) for same-gender siblings and Rob Wealth (劫財, same element but opposite polarity) for opposite-gender siblings. Competition between these elements and Wealth represents sibling rivalry over family resources.
On Wife and Concubine
論妻妾
《論妻妾》 正財為正妻,偏財妾也。 甲木見己土為正財,戊土為偏財。 又見乙木局,亥卯未傷妻。 甲寅克妻也,更主妻不正。 財衰敗墓絕,主妻有疾不賢,否則年高再嫁。 見癸字,則妾不正。 見己土醜未字,則主自安。 比肩分奪、財臨沐浴桃花,主妻妾私通。 日下月下坐財官,主妻多內助,更得妻財。 偏財得位,妾勝於妻。 主財自旺,妻不容妾。 官殺重見,妻招幹蠱可畏。 財官並美,為人怕妻;見殺尤忌。 財多身弱,妻反勝夫。 財命有氣,妻妾和順,是得妻力。 日坐空亡,難為妻妾。 又看孤鸞之日、陽錯陰錯,主克妻;或因親致眷、寒房冷娶、入贅填房。女人犯此,主父母家陵替、或致訟事。余仿此例。
Direct Wealth is the lawful wife; Indirect Wealth is the concubine. Jia Wood sees Ji Earth as Direct Wealth; Wu Earth as Indirect Wealth. If Yi Wood appears in a bureau with Hai-Mao-Wei, the wife is harmed. Jia-Yin harms the wife and further indicates the wife is improper. If Wealth is at Decline, Defeat, Tomb, or Extinction, the wife has illness and is not virtuous -- otherwise, she remarries at advanced age. Seeing Gui: the concubine is improper. Seeing Ji Earth with Chou or Wei: things are settled and at peace. Shoulder dividing and seizing, or Wealth at Bathing or Peach Blossom: the wife or concubine has illicit relations. The Day or Month sitting on Wealth-Officer: the wife gives much household assistance, and one further gains the wife's assets. If Indirect Wealth is well-positioned, the concubine surpasses the wife. If the master's Wealth is independently strong, the wife will not tolerate a concubine. Officer-Killing seen repeatedly: the wife invites meddling and manipulation -- this is fearsome. When Wealth and Officer are both fine, the person fears the wife. Seeing the Killing is especially taboo. Wealth much and Self weak: the wife instead dominates the husband. If the Wealth chart has qi, wife and concubine are harmonious and agreeable -- one gains the wife's support. The Day sitting on Emptiness: difficult for wife and concubine. Also examine the Solitary Luan days, Yang Error and Yin Error -- these indicate harming the wife; or marriage through relatives, a cold and lonely match, adopted into the wife's family, or filling a deceased spouse's place. If a woman has this, the parents' household declines, or lawsuits result. The rest follow this pattern.
The wife is represented by Direct Wealth (正財) and the concubine by Indirect Wealth (偏財). The Solitary Luan (孤鸞) days and Yang Error/Yin Error (陽錯陰錯) are specialized configurations associated with marital difficulties and unconventional marriage arrangements.
On Offspring
論子息
《論子息》 七殺者子也。 如甲見庚申是子,辛酉是女。若見丙火午寅、或殺臨陽刃殺宮,主克子;不然疾病不肖。遇戊己土得令,則子得力和順。見丙巳字,女不正;若臨沐浴桃花,更兼暗合,食神多者,其女私通。若殺臨長生月德天德,所臨之地,貴人、祿馬、食神、財鄉,言有強父貴子;要稟中和。 陽日陽時男重見;陽日陰時,先男後女;陰日陰時女重見;陰日陽時,先女後男。 傷官見官,子孫凶頑。 時上傷官及空亡,難為子息。 女命取傷官是子,食神是女;若見印綬梟神,難得子也。 男命官殺得地,而稟中和者,言其有子。將生成之數斷之,生旺倍加,死絕減半;太過不及,不以此斷。太過有子而多克夭、或凶頑;不及則少生養。 官殺得地而有扶助,吉曜多者,其子忠孝賢明;居休、囚、死、絕、破、敗、衰、病、勾絞、元兇、空虛之地,則子當不肖,貧賤疾病之子。更兼孤神寡宿,主孤苦伶仃。 且如甲子之日,甲子之時:庚死於子,死中至老沒兒郎;入墓之時難保雙;受氣絕中一個子;胎中頭女有姑娘;養中三子只留二;長生之位,旬中半合,主七個兒子也;沐浴一雙保吉康;冠帶臨官三子位;旺中五子自成行;衰中二子;病中一;自己數至亥病中一。依此推之。 且如八字中若無子星,時上又不生旺,運行官殺旺鄉,主有子;運過卻無。 如柱中有官殺,而行傷、食、休、衰、絕、弱之運,傷損其子;運過方存。 八字有一殺一子,二殺二子,無殺無子。 如柱中身殺兩停,而殺逢旺鄉,就作多子斷之;亦看財神何如,逐時增減,多寡推之。無不驗矣!
The Seven Killings is the son. For example, Jia seeing Geng-Shen is a son; Xin-You is a daughter. If one sees Bing-Fire with Wu-Yin, or the Killing reaches the Yang Blade or Killing palace, this indicates harming children -- otherwise illness or disobedience. If Wu-Ji Earth obtains the command, the children are capable and harmonious. Seeing Bing-Si: the daughter is improper. If it reaches Bathing or Peach Blossom, further combined with dark Combination, and the Food God is numerous, the daughter has illicit relations. If the Killing reaches Long Life, Monthly Virtue, or Heavenly Virtue, and the positions it occupies are Noble Person, Salary-Horse, Food God, or Wealth regions -- this indicates a powerful father and noble son. The key is to embody the Mean. Yang Day with yang Hour: sons predominantly. Yang Day with yin Hour: first a son, then daughters. Yin Day with yin Hour: daughters predominantly. Yin Day with yang Hour: first a daughter, then sons. Hurting Officer seeing Officer: the children are fierce and unruly. Hurting Officer at the Hour plus Emptiness: children are difficult to have. For a woman's chart, take the Hurting Officer as son and Food God as daughter. If the Seal or Owl Spirit appears, children are hard to obtain. For a man's chart, when Officer-Killing finds favorable ground and embodies the Mean, there will be children. Use the generative numbers to make the determination: Life and Strength double the count; Death and Extinction halve it. If excessive or deficient, do not use this method. Excess yields children who are often harmed, die young, or are fierce and unruly. Deficiency yields few births and rearing. When Officer-Killing finds favorable ground with support, and auspicious stars are numerous, the children will be loyal, filial, worthy, and brilliant. At positions of Rest, Imprisonment, Death, Extinction, Destruction, Defeat, Decline, or Illness, or with Entanglement, Original Inauspiciousness, or Emptiness, the children will be disobedient -- children of poverty, low station, and illness. With the Solitary Spirit and Widowed Lodge additionally, loneliness and desolation. For example, Jia-Zi Day, Jia-Zi Hour: Geng is Dead at Zi. 'Dead in the middle: to old age, no sons.' Entering Tomb: difficult to preserve both. Receiving qi at Extinction: one son. In the Embryo: the firstborn is a daughter. In Nurture: three sons, only two remain. At Long Life's position, within the decade half combines -- seven sons. Bathing: one pair preserved in auspiciousness and health. Capping and Career: three sons' positions. At Peak Strength: five sons form their own column. Decline: two sons. Illness: one. Count from oneself to Hai, Illness: one. Deduce from this pattern. If the eight characters have no children-star and the Hour also lacks generation and strength, traveling through Officer-Killing-strong periods indicates having children -- but once the period passes, none again. If the pillars have Officer-Killing but one enters Hurting, Food, Rest, Decline, Extinction, or Weak periods, children are harmed and diminished. Once the period passes, they endure. One Killing in the eight characters: one son. Two Killings: two sons. No Killings: no sons. If the pillars have the Self and Killing equally balanced, and the Killing encounters a strong region, determine many sons. Also examine how the Wealth spirit fares, increasing or decreasing hour by hour, deducing the many or few. It will be verified without fail.
For a man's chart, the Seven Killings (七殺) represents the son and the Direct Officer (正官) represents the daughter. For a woman's chart, this reverses: the Hurting Officer (傷官) is the son and the Food God (食神) is the daughter. The Twelve Life Stages (十二長生) are used to calculate the number of children: Long Life, Bathing, Capping, Career, Peak, Decline, Illness, Death, Tomb, Extinction, Embryo, and Nurture each yield a different count.
On Young Children
論小兒
《論小兒》 凡小兒命,見財多,必庶出螟蛉,克父母也;若幼年行運於財旺之鄉亦然。 甲側生頂不正,有胎衣遮;丁偏生雙頂,乾生有依,應有克刑;辰復生,背父易生易養;申有聲;寅遲滯;未吉;辰有胎衣包;仰生有驚。 夫小兒命,大要身旺,最喜印綬生之,無財克之,則易生災少。不要官星七殺、陽刃傷官太旺,身旺亦多災;身弱則難養。 如見所畏之辰,切不要行運歲君助之。 大畏財旺,不庶出必螟蛉,克父母也;更不要行運早,蓋氣難敵也。 【庚子,戊寅,戊子,丁巳】:生月中之後,月逢七殺,賴有丁火為印綬,寅為長生之地,能生戊土;不合見庚子,巳字金長生,其二子之水為財,克丁火生氣,反生月中七殺。七殺來克身,身弱難敵;故當年十一月,其子死矣!此為生殺壞印之禍也。 如【癸酉,癸亥,己丑,乙亥】:此命四柱財重,自分娩幾乎俱亡;未歲余父母亦亡,乃過房繼養。其它仿此,無疑也!
For young children's charts, seeing much Wealth certainly means born of a concubine or adopted, and the parents are harmed. If early years' Luck Cycles travel to the Wealth-strong region, the same applies. Jia: born sideways, crown not straight, with membrane covering. Ding: born askew, double-crowned. Qian birth has reliance, but there will be overcoming and punishment. Chen: repeat birth, back to father, easy birth and easy rearing. Shen: there is crying. Yin: slow and obstructed. Wei: auspicious. Chen: amniotic membrane wrapping. Born face-up: there is fright. For young children's charts, the key requirement is a strong Self. One most welcomes the Seal generating it, with no Wealth to overcome it -- then birth is easy and disasters are few. One does not want the Officer star, Seven Killings, Yang Blade, or Hurting Officer too strong. Even with a strong Self, there will be much disaster; with a weak Self, the child is difficult to raise. If the feared position is encountered, one absolutely must not have the period or annual luck assisting it. One greatly fears strong Wealth: if not born of a concubine, then adopted -- the parents are harmed. Further, one does not want the Luck Cycle to begin early, for the qi is hard to resist. Example: [Geng-Zi, Wu-Yin, Wu-Zi, Ding-Si]. Born after the mid-qi of the month, the Month encounters the Seven Killings. Fortunately, Ding Fire serves as Seal, and Yin is the Long Life position, able to generate Wu Earth. Unfortunately, Geng-Zi appears, and Si is Metal's Long Life. The two Zi Waters as Wealth overcome the Ding Fire life-qi, which instead generates the month's Seven Killings. The Seven Killings comes to overcome the Self, and the weak Self cannot resist. Therefore, in the eleventh month of that year, the child died. This is the disaster of 'generating the Killing and destroying the Seal.' Example: [Gui-You, Gui-Hai, Ji-Chou, Yi-Hai]. This chart has heavy Wealth across the Four Pillars. At birth, the mother nearly died. Before a full year, both parents also died, and the child was given away for adoption. Other cases follow this pattern without doubt.
Children's charts require special considerations because the young body's qi is not yet consolidated. The text identifies birth conditions (position, membrane, crying) from specific Branches, reflecting the integration of Bazi with traditional obstetric prediction. The principle that heavy Wealth indicates adoption or concubine-birth reflects the logic that Wealth (overcoming the Seal/mother) in a child's chart attacks the maternal bond.
On Children's Barrier Stars
論小兒關煞
《論小兒關煞》 小兒之命,當論時辰為主;先看關煞,次看格局。 日主強,財官旺,有關無煞。 日乾弱,財官少,常病可養。 日乾弱,財官多,有關有煞;又有三合,聚煞者難養。 不帶刑沖者,聲音響亮,夜啼急性。 八字有財官,生於富貴之家;偏官生於平常之家;傷官劫財,生於貧賤之家;偏官偏印偏財,主偏生庶出,不然第三四胎。 子平之法,偏官為關,偏財為煞,取生辰之數斷之;水一、火二、木三、金四、土五。且如甲日庚殺,乃四、九歲;如丙見壬殺,一、六歲;如戊日甲殺,三、八歲;庚日丙殺,二、七歲;壬見戊殺,五、十歲見之。至於陰乾,亦如此。無不驗矣!
For young children's charts, the Hour pillar should be taken as primary. First examine the Barrier Stars (guansha), then examine the pattern. If the Day Master is strong, and Wealth-Officer are strong, there are Barriers but no Malefics. If the Day Stem is weak and Wealth-Officer are few: frequent illness but survivable. If the Day Stem is weak and Wealth-Officer are many: there are both Barriers and Malefics. If there is additionally a Three-Combination gathering Malefics, the child is difficult to raise. Without Punishment or Clash: the voice is clear and loud, with nighttime crying and a quick temper. If the eight characters have Wealth-Officer, born into a wealthy and noble family. Indirect Officer: born into an ordinary family. Hurting Officer and Rob Wealth: born into a poor and lowly family. Indirect Officer, Indirect Seal, and Indirect Wealth: born out of wedlock or of a concubine -- otherwise the third or fourth child. The Ziping method takes the Indirect Officer as the Barrier and the Indirect Wealth as the Malefic, using the birth-hour numbers for determination: Water is 1, Fire is 2, Wood is 3, Metal is 4, Earth is 5. For example, Jia Day with Geng as Killing: ages 4 and 9. If Bing sees Ren as Killing: ages 1 and 6. Wu Day with Jia as Killing: ages 3 and 8. Geng Day with Bing as Killing: ages 2 and 7. Ren sees Wu as Killing: ages 5 and 10. For yin Stems, the same applies. It will be verified without fail.
Barrier Stars (關煞 guansha) are a specialized subsystem of spirit stars applied exclusively to children's charts to identify dangerous ages. The calculation method uses the Five Phase numbers (Water=1, Fire=2, Wood=3, Metal=4, Earth=5) derived from the He Tu (河圖) cosmic number scheme to determine which years pose the greatest risk, based on the Killing element's number.
