Ren Riding the Dragon's Back
壬騎龍背
此格以壬日坐辰,壬以丁為財,己為官,壬用支辰暗沖戌中丁戊,壬日得財官之貴。
This format requires a Ren day-stem seated on Chen. Ren uses Ding as its wealth and Ji as its official. Ren uses the Branch Chen to secretly clash with the Xu position, stirring the Ding and Wu hidden within Xu. Thus the Ren day obtains the nobility of both wealth and official stars. The chart requires multiple Chen positions to achieve the clash effectively. Having one Yin character to combine with and secure the wealth-official is ideal. One should not have wealth and official stars openly revealed. Favorable cycles include strong-self and food-spirit/injury-official directions. The south (wealth-official territory) is to be avoided. [The chapter explains the logic: Chen and Xu are directly opposite in the Branch cycle, so multiple Chens can 'clash open' the Xu storehouse, releasing the wealth and official elements hidden within. This is one of many 'dark' or 'hidden' formats where nobility derives from indirect, non-obvious chart configurations.]
壬騎龍背 (Ren qi long bei): The 'dragon' refers to the Chen Branch, which is associated with the dragon in the Chinese zodiac. 'Riding the dragon's back' means the Ren day-stem sits atop Chen. This is one of the most famous specialized formats in Bazi, valued because the nobility it confers is hidden and therefore more durable -- openly displayed wealth and authority invite challenge, while concealed power endures.
Selected Specialized Formats
特殊格局選
子遙巳祿、醜遙巳祿、沖合祿馬、六陰朝陽、六乙鼠貴、日祿歸時、拱祿拱貴
[Volume 6 contains the largest collection of specialized formats in the entire Sanming Tonghui. Selected formats include:] 'Zi Reaching Toward Si's Salary' (子遙巳祿) -- a format for Jia-Zi day / Jia-Zi hour, where the double Zi position 'reaches' toward the Si position to obtain the official star through an elaborate chain of hidden combinations. 'Six Yin Courts the Sun' (六陰朝陽) -- a format for the six Xin days meeting Wu-Zi hour, where the yin metal 'courts' the yang fire through a chain of transformations. 'Six Yi Rat Noble' (六乙鼠貴) -- a format for Yi days meeting Bing-Zi hour, where the Zi position remotely activates a triple combination bringing the official star to Yi. 'Salary Returns Home at the Hour' (日祿歸時) -- when the day-stem's salary Branch appears in the hour position, indicating that the person's fortune concentrates in the latter part of life. 'Arching Salary, Arching Noble' (拱祿拱貴) -- when the day and hour Branches flank a position that contains the day-stem's salary or noble person, 'arching' protectively over hidden wealth. [The volume also includes the 'Five-Phase Special Formats': Crooked and Straight (曲直, all-wood), Blazing Upward (炎上, all-fire), Following Revolution (從革, all-metal), Moistening Downward (潤下, all-water), and Farming and Reaping (稼穡, all-earth) -- charts dominated by a single element.]
The specialized formats represent the most esoteric and debated area of Bazi theory. Many involve 'reaching' (遙), 'arching' (拱), or 'hidden clashing' (暗沖) -- mechanisms where chart elements interact through invisible chains of combination and clash rather than direct contact. These formats were historically important because they could explain why certain charts that appeared weak or unpromising by standard analysis actually belonged to powerful or successful individuals.
On Proper Wealth through On Established Salary
論正財至論建祿
論正財、論偏財、論印綬、論倒食、論雜氣、論傷官、論食神、飛天祿馬、倒沖祿、論陽刃、論建祿
[The second half of Volume 6 provides comprehensive treatments of the remaining standard formats and key concepts:] 'On Proper Wealth' (正財) -- when the day-stem's yin-controlled element appears as the primary format. Proper Wealth charts indicate stable, earned income and a dutiful spouse. 'On Partial Wealth' (偏財) -- the yang-controlled element as format. Partial Wealth indicates windfall gains, trading profits, and secondary relationships. 'On the Seal Ribbon' (印綬) -- detailed analysis of the format where the day-stem is protected and nourished by its generating element. The Seal represents education, credentials, maternal support, and intellectual authority. 'On the Inverted Food' (倒食, also called 'Owl Robber'/梟神) -- when the Seal element appears to 'rob' the Food Spirit, creating a situation where protection and nourishment conflict. 'On the Injury Official' (傷官) -- the day-stem's same-polarity generated element, which 'injures' the Official star. One of the most complex and double-edged formats: it can indicate brilliant creativity and eloquence, or self-destructive defiance of authority. 'On the Food Spirit' (食神) -- the day-stem's opposite-polarity generated element, a generally benevolent indicator of nourishment, creativity, and the generation of wealth. 'On the Yang Blade' (陽刃) -- the dangerous extension past peak prosperity, associated with military command, surgical skill, and violent tendencies. 'On Established Salary' (建祿) -- when the month Branch is the day-stem's salary position, indicating a self-made person who starts with innate strength but must find their own path to wealth and authority.
The distinction between Proper (正) and Partial (偏) forms is one of the organizing principles of Bazi: Proper Official vs. Seven Killer, Proper Wealth vs. Partial Wealth, Proper Seal vs. Partial Seal (Owl). In each case, the 'proper' form involves yin-yang complementary interaction (considered harmonious), while the 'partial' form involves same-polarity interaction (considered forceful or unstable). This yin-yang pairing logic extends through the entire system.
