The Eight Observation Methods

Wei -- Dignity/Authority

Dignity that inspires awe; authority suggests power and influence. Like a fierce eagle seizing a rabbit, like an angry tiger, victorious in a hundred battles. Spirit and complexion are stern and solemn. The Wei type indicates one destined for authority and power, naturally commanding respect. Their presence alone inspires compliance.

Hou -- Substance/Thickness

Body and appearance are solid and weighty; thickness indicates fortune and prosperity. The capacity is like the vast ocean; the vessel is like a ten-thousand-measure boat. It does not sway when approached, cannot be moved when pulled. The Hou type indicates lasting fortune and prosperity through steady, reliable accumulation.

Qing -- Clarity/Refinement

Spirit is elegant and outstanding; the clear one is called 'refined,' the elegant one 'refined gentleman.' Like a single branch of osmanthus: lofty, elegant, and spiritually unstained by dust. Yet if too thick, it approaches thinness (balance is needed). The Qing type indicates potential for scholarly or artistic achievement.

Gu -- Ancient/Classic

The Ancient type has antique bone and qi, with bearing that is angular and prominent -- this is called 'classic.' Ancient yet not outdated. If merely clear without depth, one approaches the common. The Gu type indicates connection to ancient wisdom and timeless values, often scholars of classical texts.

Gu -- Solitary/Isolated

The Solitary type has isolated form and bone, with a cold appearance, long crown, and prominent shoulders. Legs are contracted, the head tilted; the sitting posture is like a metal weight. Like a solitary goose by the water, like a heron standing in the rain. Indicates a solitary fate -- potentially lacking family support, children, or close relationships.

Bo -- Thin/Insubstantial

The Thin type has insubstantial body and appearance, with weak form, light qi, and timid nature. Color is dim and dark; spirit is exposed with nothing concealed. Like a flower boat drifting, visible above heavy waves. Thinness indicates poverty and low status, with insufficient foundation for accumulating wealth.

E -- Malicious/Evil

The Evil type has a fierce body and appearance, stubborn and oppressive like a snake or rat, cunning like a wolf. The temperament is violent; spirit is alarming, bones are harmful; all joints are broken -- nothing is sufficient for beauty. Indicates harm, violence, and criminal fate.

Su -- Common/Vulgar

The Common type has dull form and appearance, turbid like dust. Mediocre and murky in all things, with a bland common nature surrounding all. Food and clothing are also scattered. Indicates an ordinary fate without distinction -- neither particularly good nor bad.
