ACCUMULATED YEARS: From the Superior Epoch jiayin year to Tang Kaiyuan twelfth year, jiazi, the accumulation is 285,011. Your minister, for ease of rapid computation, takes Han Emperor An's Yuanchu jiayin year as a nearer starting point — to Kaiyuan twelfth year, jiazi, the accumulation is 611. SOVEREIGN-BASE TAIYI METHOD: The classic states: The region where the Sovereign-Base resides is most suitable for the ruler to visit or tour in that direction to fulfill the omen. Set down the accumulated years from the Superior Epoch. Remove multiples of 360 (the grand cycle) — the remainder is the number of years since entering the cycle. Divide by 30 — the quotient is the domain number; any remainder is the years since entering that domain. Count from the Xu domain, proceeding forward through twelve domains. The result gives the Sovereign-Base's location. MINISTER-BASE TAIYI METHOD: The classic states: The region where the Minister-Base resides is where tribute should be offered to serve the sage-ruler. Set down the accumulated years. Remove multiples of 360; from the remainder, remove multiples of 36. Divide the remainder by 3 — the quotient is the domain number; any remainder is the years since entering that domain. Count from the Xu domain, proceeding forward through twelve domains. The result gives the Minister-Base's location. PEOPLE-BASE TAIYI METHOD: Set down the accumulated years. Remove multiples of 360; from the remainder, remove multiples of 12. Count from the Xu domain, proceeding forward through twelve domains. The result gives the People-Base Taiyi's location.
The three 'base' Taiyi deities (君基, 臣基, 民基) correspond to the three powers (三才): sovereign/heaven, minister/earth, people/humanity. Each travels through twelve 'domains' (邦) corresponding to the twelve earthly branches. Their positions indicate which region is most important for the ruler to attend to, where tribute should be collected, and where the populace requires governance respectively.
The computational methods differ in their divisors: Sovereign-Base uses 30 (360/12), Minister-Base uses 36 then divides by 3 (yielding 12), and People-Base uses 12 directly. Despite different cycles, all three travel through the same twelve domains starting from Xu (戌). The different periodicities mean the three deities are rarely in the same domain simultaneously.
Five Blessings Taiyi and Grand Roaming Taiyi Methods

FIVE BLESSINGS TAIYI METHOD: The classic states: The region where the Five Blessings Taiyi resides is free from warfare, plague, famine, flood, and drought. It travels through five palaces, staying 45 years in each, completing one cycle in 225 years. First: Yellow Secret Palace — at the Qian position of the Western River (northwest). Second: Yellow Beginning Palace — at the Gen position of Liaodong (east). Third: Yellow Chamber Palace — at the Xun position of Eastern Wu (southeast). Fourth: Yellow Court Palace — at the Kun position of Western Shu (southwest). Fifth: Dark Master Palace — at the center, the capital Luoyang. GRAND ROAMING TAIYI'S POSITION: The classic states: The Grand Roaming Taiyi inspects the eight palaces. When sharing a palace with the Minor Roaming, it conducts one assessment lasting 36 years: 12 years governing heaven, 12 years governing earth, 12 years governing the people — evaluating the ruler's virtue and failings. It completes one full cycle in 288 years. Regarding military campaigns: when Taiyi is in a yang palace, Liaodong will not see warfare. When in a yin palace, Shu-Han can preserve itself. Palaces 8, 3, 4, 9 are yang palaces; Palaces 2, 7, 6, 1 are yin palaces.
The Five Blessings Taiyi (五福太乙) is uniquely benevolent among the subsidiary deities — its presence guarantees freedom from all five major disasters. Its five palaces have special names (Yellow Secret, Yellow Beginning, etc.) suggesting they are distinct from the standard nine-palace system. The 225-year cycle means each region enjoys 45 years of guaranteed peace, making this the longest-period blessing in the system.
The Grand Roaming Taiyi (大遊太乙) mirrors the main Taiyi's three-year governance pattern but at a much larger scale: 36 years per palace (12 per power) versus 3 years. The yang/yin palace distinction for military affairs reflects the fundamental principle that yang palaces favor military action while yin palaces favor preservation and defense.
The 'Grand Roaming Heaven Eye Great Baleful' (天目大煞) is appended to this section in the original. The Grand Roaming Taiyi also has its own Celestial Eye, computed with a cycle of 18 spirits, functioning as a secondary indicator within the 288-year grand cycle.

MINOR ROAMING TAIYI METHOD: From the Computation-Epoch Superior Epoch jiazi year to Tang Kaiyuan twelfth year, jiazi: the accumulation is 3,361. Set down the accumulation. Remove multiples of 240 (the Minor Roaming grand cycle); from the remainder, remove multiples of 24 (the minor cycle). Divide by 3 — the quotient is the palace number; any remainder is the years since entering that palace. Count from Palace 1, proceeding forward through eight palaces, skipping the central fifth. The result gives the Minor Roaming Taiyi's position. FOUR SPIRITS TAIYI METHOD: The classic states: The Four Spirits Taiyi is a water deity. It upholds the principles of governance — in an era of the Way, it brings prosperity; in an era without the Way, it brings calamity. If it occupies a region of overcoming and destruction while the ruler lacks virtue, there will be warfare, flood, drought, and famine. CELESTIAL UNITY TAIYI METHOD: The classic states: The Celestial Unity Taiyi is a metal deity. It draws upon Palace 6's metal qi and governs military affairs. When years of continuous warfare occur, the Celestial Unity's presence determines victory and defeat — for metal has the power of decisive judgment, governing both military success and military loss. TERRESTRIAL UNITY TAIYI METHOD: Set down the years since entering the cycle (same as Four Spirits). Divide by 3 — the quotient is the palace number. Count from Palace 6, proceeding forward through Palace 9, then continuing with three additional palaces. The result gives the Terrestrial Unity Taiyi's position. DIRECT TALISMAN TAIYI METHOD: The classic states: The Direct Talisman Taiyi is a fire deity — the Celestial Emperor's emissary, dispatched by heaven to observe governance and the Way among the myriad people. If it occupies a state without the Way, there will be warfare, flood, drought, plague, famine, and mass displacement.
These five subsidiary Taiyi deities each embody one of the five phases: Four Spirits (水/water), Celestial Unity (金/metal), Terrestrial Unity (implied 木/wood based on its starting palace), Direct Talisman (火/fire), with the Minor Roaming serving as the central coordinator. Together they form a complete five-phase subsystem within the larger Taiyi framework.
The Four Spirits Taiyi uniquely travels through an extended palace system: the standard nine palaces plus three additional palaces named Crimson Palace (絳宮), Bright Hall (明堂), and Jade Hall (玉堂). These twelve positions correspond to twelve provinces, providing finer geographic resolution than the eight-palace main system.
The extensive lookup table (立成鈐) that concludes Volume 5 cross-references all sixty sexagenary years against the palace positions of Four Spirits, Celestial Unity, Terrestrial Unity, and Direct Talisman across three sub-cycles (upper, middle, lower epochs). This pre-computed table allowed practitioners to determine all four deities' positions for any year without performing the full computation.
