Courage in daring leads to death. Courage in not-daring leads to life. Of these two, one benefits and one harms. Who knows why heaven dislikes what it dislikes? Even the sage finds this difficult. The Way of heaven doesn't strive yet wins well, doesn't speak yet responds well, isn't summoned yet comes on its own, is relaxed yet plans well. Heaven's net is vast, its mesh is wide — yet nothing slips through. It's like the weather, you see — it never hurries, never pushes, never argues with you about what's going to happen next. And yet everything happens exactly when and how it should. That's what makes it so awesome — this unhurried, effortless precision.

Boldness in daring — death. Boldness in not-daring — life. Of these two, one profits and one harms. What heaven hates, who knows why? Even the sage considers this difficult. The Tao of heaven does not contend yet excels at winning, does not speak yet excels at responding, does not summon yet things come of themselves, is unhurried yet excels at planning. Heaven's net is vast and wide-meshed — yet nothing escapes it. This is perhaps the most psychedelic passage in the Dao De Jing — the image of an intelligence so vast that it doesn't need to try, doesn't need to speak, doesn't need to reach out, and yet nothing in the universe falls outside its pattern. It's the cosmic web, the interconnection matrix, the mycelial network of reality itself. Loose yet inescapable. Relaxed yet precise. This is what the logos looks like from the outside.

Wang Bi reads this chapter as a meditation on the unknowable calculus of heaven. Courage to dare leads to death. Courage not to dare leads to life. Of these two courages, one benefits and one harms — but who can really know why heaven dislikes what it dislikes? Even the sage finds this difficult. Wang Bi says: heaven's Way does not contend, yet it is excellent at overcoming — because compliance brings good fortune and resistance brings misfortune. It does not speak, yet it is excellent at responding. It does not summon, yet things come to it of their own accord. Wang Bi glosses this beautifully: 'Dwelling below, things naturally return to it, without summoning, without naming, and yet they come of themselves.' And then the great net of heaven: vast, vast, with wide meshes — and yet nothing slips through. Wang Bi sees heaven's Way as operating through a kind of broad, unhurried wisdom — it appears loose and spacious, and yet it misses nothing.

Wang Bi's reading of this chapter addresses the fundamental opacity of cosmic intention. Both kinds of courage produce definite results — one kills, one preserves — but WHY heaven detests one and favors the other is beyond human calculation. 「就誰也克謂能知天下之所惡喬其唯聖人」 — who can claim to know what all-under-heaven detests? Perhaps only the sage — and even the sage finds it difficult. This is a genuinely humble epistemological claim: the cosmic order has a logic, but that logic is not fully transparent even to the wisest. Then four attributes of heaven's Way: it does not contend yet excels at overcoming — Wang Bi glosses this as 'compliance brings fortune, resistance brings misfortune.' It does not speak yet excels at responding. It does not summon yet things come of themselves — Wang Bi says 「處下則物自歸而不名而自來」, dwelling below, things naturally flow to it. And 'relaxed yet excellent at planning' — Wang Bi glosses 繟然 as open and spacious, yet seeing clearly, planning wisely, being vigilant while appearing at ease. Then the magnificent image: heaven's net is vast, its mesh wide — 「疏而不失」 — yet nothing is lost. This is a description of distributed intelligence — a system that appears loose and yet captures everything. No centralized surveillance required. The mesh is wide precisely because the intelligence is everywhere.
