甲德在甲，甲陽也，故甲即甲之德也。乙德在庚，乙陰也，庚能制乙者也，在乙而從庚，是即乙之德也。丙丁以下倣此。蓋陽之為德也在不化乎陰，而陰之為德也在棄其本位而從乎陽。
Jia's virtue is at Jia -- Jia is yang, so Jia is its own virtue. Yi's virtue is at Geng -- Yi is yin, and Geng can control Yi; Yi following Geng IS Yi's virtue. Bing, Ding, and below follow this pattern. Yang achieves virtue by not transforming into yin; yin achieves virtue by abandoning its own position to follow yang.

歲德合辨析
歲德與歲德合並屬上吉，有宜無忌。歲德無問陰年陽年皆剛辰也，歲德合皆柔辰也。歲幹合為歲中大神，然乙丁己辛癸之年則所為甲丙戊庚壬者即歲德也，甲丙戊庚壬之年則所為乙丁己辛癸者即歲德合也。既有歲德歲德合則不必復著歲幹合之名也。雖然要各有義，不得因彼而廢此也。
Year Virtue and Year Virtue Combination are both rated 'upper auspicious' with no taboos. Year Virtue is always a hard/firm day; Year Virtue Combination is always a soft/yielding day. Year Stem Combination is a major yearly spirit, but in yin-stem years the result is the same as Year Virtue, and in yang-stem years it equals Year Virtue Combination. Since both already exist, there is no strict need for Year Stem Combination. However, each has its own distinct meaning -- one must not abolish one because of the other.
