Preface to Activities

The Warp and Weft Metaphor

The suitable and taboo conditions for activity selection are fully prepared. However, when annotating the Perpetual Calendar, events serve as the warp and spirit-stars as the weft; when selecting auspicious dates and times, spirit-stars serve as the categories and events serve as the guiding principles. This is because calendar annotations are ordered by events, and date-selection begins from events.

Three Activity Classification Systems

The Great Qing Collected Statutes records that the Perpetual Calendar annotations classify activities as: 67 Imperial Activities and 27 Commoner Activities. The Almanac records 60 activities for date-selection. We now combine these into one compilation, listing suitable and taboo [conditions] beneath each activity.
