Translation

Tong Ren (Fellowship with People), Li (Fire) below, Qian (Heaven) above.

Fellowship with people in the open wilderness — Success. It is beneficial to cross the great river. It is beneficial for the superior person's Correctness.

疏 Kong Yingda's Subcommentary

Translation

The Correct Meaning states: 'Tong Ren' means harmoniously uniting with people. 'In the wilderness, success' — the wilderness is a broad and distant place.

Borrowing the name 'wilderness' as a metaphor for breadth and distance, it means that in harmoniously uniting with people, one must be broad and expansive, leaving nothing un-unified. ' This 'it is beneficial to cross the great river' borrows the image of things to illuminate human affairs.
