疏 Kong Yingda's Subcommentary

The Correct Meaning states: Earlier scholars, following the old arrangement of the Changes, divided the first thirty hexagrams above this point as the Upper Canon, and the thirty-four hexagrams below as the Lower Canon. The Sequence of the Hexagrams begins a new starting point here.

Earlier scholars all held that the Upper Canon illuminates the Way of Heaven and the Lower Canon illuminates human affairs.

However, Han Kangbo's commentary on the Sequence of the Hexagrams refuted this meaning, saying: 'The Changes forms hexagrams from six lines, necessarily encompassing the three powers.

' Examining this: within the Upper Canon, it illuminates that where there is eating and drinking there must be litigation, and where there is litigation there must be multitudes arising—this encompasses human affairs and does not specialize in the Way of Heaven alone.

Since it does not specialize in the Way of Heaven, then the Lower Canon does not specialize in human affairs either, and this principle is indeed so. Yet Confucius in the Sequence of the Hexagrams does not attach Xian to Li.

The Appended Statements says 'the reckoning of the two sections,' indicating that the sixty-four hexagrams were anciently divided into upper and lower: Qian and Kun symbolize Heaven and Earth, Xian and Heng illuminate husband and wife.

Qian and Kun are the root of creation and transformation; husband and wife are truly the origin of human relationships. To model them accordingly—what objection could there be? As for Heaven and Earth each having their own hexagram while husband and wife share hexagrams, Mr.

' This cannot be correct. I humbly suggest: Qian and Kun illuminate the initial opening of Heaven and Earth; by the time of Zhun, the firm and yielding first interact. Therefore pure yang symbolizes Heaven and pure yin symbolizes Earth, while Xian illuminates human affairs.

Once people and creatures are born, they mutually influence and respond to one another. If the two qi do not interact, mutual influence cannot be achieved, so naturally Heaven and Earth each get one hexagram while husband and wife share a hexagram.

This goes without saying—how could one recklessly create heterodox views! As for 'Xian: Success, Benefit in Correctness, taking a wife brings good fortune'—Xian means influence. This hexagram illuminates the beginning of human relationships and the meaning of husband and wife.

Man and woman must mutually influence and respond to each other before they can become husband and wife. Once they mutually influence and respond, they attain success and free flow.

If they communicate through deviant ways, then misfortune and harm will follow; therefore benefit lies in correctness. '
