Hexagram Statement
Duration with Success accomplishes three things. As for the Way of Duration, Success then leads to no blame. Duration with free passage and no blame then leads to benefit from Correctness.
Each attains what it makes enduring and cultivates its constant Way. When things end there is a new beginning, and in going forth nothing is contrary. Therefore 'benefit in having somewhere to go.'
The Correct Meaning states: As for 'Success, no blame, benefit from Correctness': Heng means enduring. The Way of endurance values adaptability and change. One must adapt and change in accordance with the times in order to last long. Being able to endure and remain unobstructed means no blame.
Duration with free passage and no blame, and then it is beneficial to practice Correctness. '
' The note does not specify the number clearly, so earlier scholars each explained it according to their own understanding.
I humbly suggest that when the note says 'Duration with Success accomplishes three things,' it makes clear that this Duration-with-Success is used to accomplish those three things; there is no doubt that the word 'Success' is not among the three things.
Moreover this note says: 'As for the Way of Duration, Success then leads to no blame. ' These explanations all treat 'benefit from Correctness' as a single thing; to divide it into two would likely miss the intent of the note.
Examining this note: 'As for the Way of Duration, Success then leads to no blame'—this is Duration-with-Success accomplishing no blame. Again: 'Duration with free passage and no blame then leads to benefit from Correctness'—this is Duration-with-Success accomplishing benefit from Correctness.
The note below on 'benefit in having somewhere to go' says: 'Each attains what it makes enduring and cultivates its constant Way; when things end there is a new beginning, and in going forth nothing is contrary; therefore benefit in having somewhere to go'—this is Duration-with-Success accomplishing benefit in having somewhere to go.
Examining the text and verifying against the notes, Master Chu's view is the best.
