Hexagram Statement

卦辭

經 Classic Text

大壯乾下震上 大壯,利貞。

Translation

Da Zhuang (Great Vigor): Qian below, Zhen above.

Great Vigor. Benefit in Correctness.

疏 Kong Yingda's Subcommentary

正義曰:大壯,卦名也。壯者,強盛之名。以陽稱大,陽長既多,是大者盛壯,故曰大壯。利貞者,卦德也。群陽盛長,小道將滅,大者獲正,故曰利貞也。

Translation

The Correct Meaning states: Da Zhuang (Great Vigor) is the hexagram name. Zhuang (vigor) means strength and flourishing. Since yang is called "great," and when yang lines have grown to become many, the great is vigorously strong—hence it is called Great Vigor.

"Benefit in Correctness" is the hexagram's virtue. "
