經 Classic Text

Translation

Sheng (Ascending). Xun below, Kun above.

Ascending. Sublime Beginning and Success. It is beneficial to see a great person; do not worry.

An expedition to the south brings good fortune.

注 Wang Bi's Commentary

Translation

Through the compliance of Xun one can ascend. Yet the yang line does not occupy the honored position and lacks the correctness of stern firmness, so one is not free from worry. Therefore, by seeing a great person, one is freed from anxiety.

By going south with yielding softness, one attaches to the great brightness.

疏 Kong Yingda's Subcommentary

Translation

The Correct Meaning states: 'Ascending, Sublime Beginning and Success'—Sheng is the name of the hexagram. ' 'It is beneficial to see a great person; do not worry'—ascending means climbing.

The yang line does not occupy the honored position and lacks the correctness of firm sternness, so one is not free from worry. Therefore, by seeing a person of great virtue, only then can one be free from worry and anxiety. '

Translation

'An expedition to the south brings good fortune'—not only must one see a person of great virtue, but one should also go to a place of brightness and yang. If one goes from yin toward more yin, this only deepens the darkness.

The south is the direction of brightness and yang, hence it says an expedition to the south brings good fortune.
