Hexagram Statement
Taking Xun (compliance) entirely as its virtue, therefore it achieves only small success. Both upper and lower trigrams are Xun, so none disobey the commands, and thus orders are carried out.
Therefore, at the time of reiterating commands and carrying out affairs, those above and below cannot but be compliant.
When one proceeds with compliance and deference, nothing resists.
When a great person employs this, the Way flourishes all the more.
The Correct Meaning states: Regarding 'Xun: small success, benefit in having somewhere to go, benefit in seeing a great person'—Xun is the name for humble compliance.
' This is because Xun is the trigram symbolizing wind, and wind goes everywhere without fail to enter, so 'entering' is taken as its gloss. When applied to human affairs, one who can humble oneself in compliance likewise finds nothing that will not accommodate them.
The meaning of Xun takes humble compliance as its substance and accommodating entry as its function, hence it receives the name Xun.
When both upper and lower trigrams are Xun, there is no defiance or rebellion; the ruler proposes and the ministers harmonize, and thus instructions and commands are carried out. Therefore, in the doubled Xun hexagram, the principle of reiterating commands is made clear. '
When one proceeds with compliance and deference, nothing defies or resists—hence it says 'benefit in having somewhere to go.'
All who can employ compliance find nothing unfavorable wherever they go. However, when a great person employs compliance, the Way flourishes all the more—hence it says 'benefit in seeing a great person,' making clear that both those above and those below must employ compliance.
