經 Classic Text

Translation

Dui: Dui below, Dui above.

Dui. Success. Benefit in Correctness.

疏 Kong Yingda's Subcommentary

Translation

The Correct Meaning states: Dui means joy. ' Since Dui is the trigram that symbolizes the marsh, it takes Dui as its name. The marsh moistens and gives life to the myriad things, and therefore the myriad things all rejoice.

Applied to human affairs, it is like a ruler nourishing the people with grace and benevolence, so that the people are without exception joyful. When benevolence is bestowed and the people rejoice, this is why there is success.

Yet when one uses joy to please things, there is the danger of falling into flattery and deviance; the benefit lies in correctness. Therefore it says 'Dui: Success. '
