Discourse 1: Classification Rules for the Useful Spirit

用神分類定例第一

凡占祖父母、父母之親友、及牆城宅舍舟車衣服雨具,或與父母年若之親長、家主、伯叔姑姨,與我父母同事,或與父母同輩師長之稱,章奏文章、館舍,俱以父母為用神。 凡占功名官府雷電鬼神,凡天災之兄弟同輩及夫,俱以官鬼爻為用神。 凡占兄弟姊妹、妻之兄弟、結盟同輩及知交朋友,俱以兄弟爻為用神。 凡占嫂與弟婦、妻妾及兄弟之妻妾、婢僕、物價錢財珠寶金銀倉庫錢糧什物器皿,及問天時晴明,俱以妻財爻為用神。 凡占兒女孫姪女壻、禽鳥、順風解憂遊禍,及問天時日月星斗,俱以子孫爻為用神。

For divining about grandparents, parents' close friends, walls/cities/houses/boats/carriages/clothing/rain gear, relatives of parents' generation, household heads, uncles/aunts, parents' colleagues or teachers, memorials/essays, or lodgings — all use the Parent line as the Useful Spirit. For divining about rank and fame, government offices, thunder and lightning, ghosts and spirits, or natural disasters — use the Official-Ghost line. For divining about brothers and sisters, wife's siblings, sworn brothers, peers, or close friends — use the Sibling line. For divining about sisters-in-law, wives and concubines, servants, commodity prices, money, treasures, granaries, utensils — or asking about fair weather — use the Wife-Wealth line. For divining about sons, daughters, grandchildren, nephews, sons-in-law, birds, favorable winds, relief from worry — or asking about sun, moon, and stars — use the Offspring line.

Discourse 4: The Origin Spirit, Aversion Spirit, and Enemy Spirit

原神忌仇神論第四

凡占卦要知原神,先看用神。何爻生用神之爻,即是原神。如用神旬空、月破、衰弱、或伏藏不現,得原神動來生之,或日辰月建作原神生之,必待用神出現。 凡占卦要知忌神,亦先看用神。剋用神之爻,即是忌神也。如忌神動來剋用神,則用神受傷。卦中又動出一爻生用神,根蒂深固矣,其吉更倍也。 凡占卦要知仇神,先看剋原神、生扶忌神之爻,即是仇神也。如仇神發動,則原神破傷,用忌無根。

To know the Origin Spirit in any divination, first identify the Useful Spirit. The line whose phase generates the Useful Spirit is the Origin Spirit. If the Useful Spirit is in Decadal Emptiness, Monthly Destruction, weak, or hidden — and the Origin Spirit moves to generate it, or the day-stem or month-establishment acts as Origin Spirit to generate it — the Useful Spirit will eventually emerge. To know the Aversion Spirit, again start from the Useful Spirit. The line whose phase overcomes the Useful Spirit is the Aversion Spirit. If it moves to attack the Useful Spirit, the Useful Spirit is injured. But if another line in the hexagram also moves to generate the Useful Spirit, its roots are deeply established, and the fortune is doubly good. To know the Enemy Spirit, look for the line that overcomes the Origin Spirit and supports the Aversion Spirit. If the Enemy Spirit activates, the Origin Spirit is damaged and the Useful Spirit loses its foundation.

Discourse 10: Decadal Emptiness

旬空論第十

凡卦中爻遇旬空,動不為空。伏而旺相,旬空不為空。動爻變空,伏而被剋,靜逢月破,值此等旬空者,日辰剋之,謂之真空,到底空矣。

When a line in the hexagram meets Decadal Emptiness: if it is moving, it is not considered empty. If it is hidden but in a prosperous or prime phase, the emptiness does not apply. However, if a moving line transforms into emptiness, or a hidden line is overcome, or a static line meets Monthly Destruction — these types of emptiness, especially when the day-stem also overcomes the line, constitute True Emptiness. It will be empty to the end.

Discourse 13: Prosperous, Prime, Resting, Imprisoned

旺相休囚論第十三

春令木旺火相,夏令火旺土相,秋令金旺水相,冬令水旺木相,四季之月土旺金相。凡卦中旺相之爻,雖不能盡遠志,得合遇時仍發;此休囚之爻,得日辰及動爻生扶,亦為有用。

In spring, Wood is Prosperous and Fire is Prime. In summer, Fire is Prosperous and Earth is Prime. In autumn, Metal is Prosperous and Water is Prime. In winter, Water is Prosperous and Wood is Prime. In the four inter-seasonal months, Earth is Prosperous and Metal is Prime. Lines in the hexagram that are Prosperous or Prime, even if temporarily unable to act, will activate when they meet the right combination or timing. Lines that are Resting or Imprisoned, if they receive generation and support from the day-stem or moving lines, can still be useful.

Discourse 17: Advancing and Retreating Spirits

進退神論第十七

凡卦中亥變子、丑變辰、寅變卯、卯變辰、巳變午、未變申,乃進神也。進者吉倍增其勢也。 凡卦中午變巳、辰變卯、寅變丑、子變亥、戌變酉、申變未,乃退神也。退者吉凶漸減其威。

When lines in the hexagram transform: Hai to Zi, Chou to Chen, Yin to Mao, Mao to Chen, Si to Wu, Wei to Shen — these are Advancing Spirits. Advancing means fortune doubles in force. When lines transform: Wu to Si, Chen to Mao, Yin to Chou, Zi to Hai, Xu to You, Shen to Wei — these are Retreating Spirits. Retreating means fortune or misfortune gradually diminishes in power.

Discourse 18: On When Divination Fails to Verify

不驗論第十八

凡人問卦,惟恐敗而戒齋戒謹慎,指其占一事,神前祝告而後占。其理無之,則是原神忌神動靜生剋合沖變化旬空月破日辰之理,用神明白,是故齋莊敬占。不誠不格,不驗也。又知與人代占,先說明某何名分別用神,以為占驗處無差謬。

When people consult the oracle, they should fast and observe reverence, address one matter specifically, announce it before the spirits, and only then cast. The principles involved are: Origin Spirit, Aversion Spirit, movement and stillness, generation and overcoming, combination and clash, transformation, Decadal Emptiness, Monthly Destruction, and day-stem relationships — with the Useful Spirit clearly identified. This is why one must approach divination with solemn respect. Without sincerity, there is no resonance, and verification fails. Also know that when divining on behalf of another, one must first state the person's name and their relationship to the matter, properly distinguishing the Useful Spirit, so that the verification has no discrepancy.
