Zhouyi Benyi: The Lower Classic

周易本義下經

Kan (The Abysmal, Water)

坎卦

坎。習坎,有孚,維心亨,行有尚。

Kan. Repeated danger. If there is sincerity, the heart alone can prevail. Action will be honored.

Zhu Xi's commentary: '習 (xi, repeated) means layered or doubled. The Kan trigram is doubled, hence the name "repeated danger." One who has sincerity in the heart, even amid repeated dangers, will find the mind's way prevailing.' The Lower Classic (下經) begins with Kan and Li (hexagrams 29-30) and continues through hexagram 64 (Weiji, 'Before Completion').
