經 Classic Text

Translation

Da Xu (Great Accumulation), Qian below, Gen above.

Great Accumulation. Benefit in Correctness. Not eating at home—auspicious. Benefit in crossing a great river.

疏 Kong Yingda's Subcommentary

Translation

The Correct Meaning states: The reason it is called Great Accumulation is that Qian, the strong, advances upward, while Gen, the still, is above—it halts and accumulates it, able to restrain and hold the firm and strong, hence it is called Great Accumulation.

The Tuan says 'able to halt the strong—this is great correctness,' meaning that being able to halt the strong makes it Great Accumulation. In Small Accumulation, Xun is above Qian, but because of its gentle compliance it cannot restrain the firmness of Qian, hence it is called Small Accumulation.

Here Gen is able to halt it, hence it is Great Accumulation. 'Benefit in Correctness' means: one who can halt the strong cannot do so without correctness, hence benefit in correctness.

'Not eating at home—auspicious' means: already possessing the resources of great accumulation, one must nourish and support the worthy; not allowing the worthy to eat at home by themselves—this is auspicious.

'Benefit in crossing a great river' means: abundance enables nourishing the worthy, corresponding to the Way of Heaven, with no worry about dangers and difficulties, hence benefit in crossing a great river.
