Hexagram Statement

卦辭

經 Classic Text

頤震下艮上 頤,貞吉。觀頤,自求口實。

Translation

Yi (Nourishment). Zhen below, Gen above.

Nourishment. Correctness brings good fortune. Observe the nourishment: seek for yourself what fills the mouth.

疏 Kong Yingda's Subcommentary

正義曰:「頤貞吉」者,於頤養之世,養此貞正,則得吉也。「觀頤」者,頤,養也,觀此聖人所養物也。「自求口實」者,觀其自養,求其口中之實也。

Translation

The Correct Meaning states: "Nourishment, correctness brings good fortune" means that in a time of nourishment, if one nourishes what is correct and proper, then one attains good fortune. "Observe the nourishment" means: Yi is nourishment; one observes what the sage nourishes.

"Seek for yourself what fills the mouth" means: observe how one nourishes oneself, seeking what is substantial in the mouth.
