經 Classic Text

Translation

Jian (Gradual Advance): Gen below, Xun above.

Gradual Advance. The woman's marriage is auspicious. Benefit in Correctness.

注 Wang Bi's Commentary

Translation

Jian is the hexagram of gradual advance. Stillness combined with compliance — by these means one proceeds forward; this is gradual advance. Because stillness and compliance constitute the mode of advance, the woman's marriage is auspicious.

Because one advances while employing Correctness, there is Benefit in Correctness.

疏 Kong Yingda's Subcommentary

Translation

The Correct Meaning states: Jian (Gradual) is the name for what is not swift. Whenever things undergo change and transition, moving slowly and not swiftly, this is called jian (gradual). 'The woman's marriage is auspicious' — gui means to marry.

A woman is born with the meaning of achieving fulfillment outside the family; she takes her husband's household as her home, hence marrying is called gui (returning). When a woman marries, she prepares the full rites before taking action. '
