Key Hexagrams (8)

#29

KǎnThe Abyss

Danger doubled—this is the situation, not your attitude. Sincerity in the heart leads to success. Whatever you do works when inner truth guides action. Water teaches the lesson: flow continuously, fill every depression completely, never shrink from plunging through. Thoroughness and forward movement—these prevent perishing in danger.

#39

JiǎnObstruction

The southwest furthers. The northeast does not further. It furthers one to see the great man. Persistence brings good fortune. Abyss before you, steep mountain behind—obstacles surround. The direction of retreat furthers, not the direction of advance. Pause, retreat, join with allies, find leadership equal to the situation. Persevering when you seem to move away from your goal brings good fortune in the end. Adversity is useful for self-development.

#47

KùnOppression

Success. Persistence. The great person brings about good fortune. No blame. When you have something to say, it is not believed. Adversity is the reverse of success but can lead to success if it befalls the right person. The strong one remains cheerful despite danger—this cheerfulness is the source of later success, a stability stronger than fate. He who lets his spirit be broken has no success. But if adversity only bends you, it creates a power to react. In times of adversity, be strong within and sparing of words.

#3

ZhūnDifficulty at the Beginning

You're at the start of something—chaos precedes order. Everything is trying to take form at once. Don't force it. Premature action wastes what's emerging. Find helpers; you can't organize this alone.

#36

明夷Míng YíDarkening of the Light

In adversity, persistence furthers. The sun sinks beneath the earth. A person of dark nature holds authority and harms the wise. Don't be swept along by unfavorable circumstances. Maintain inner light while remaining outwardly yielding. Hide your light to make your will prevail despite hostile environment. Perseverance dwells in inmost consciousness, invisible from without.

#28

大過Dà GuòGreat Exceeding

The ridgepole sags. The structure is under too much stress—strong in the middle, weak at the ends. This cannot last. Transition is needed immediately. Find somewhere to go. Success comes only through movement; staying put means collapse.

#43

GuàiBreakthrough

The matter must be resolutely made known at the king's court. Truthfully announced. Danger. Notify your own city. Do not resort to arms. It furthers one to undertake something. A single passion lurking in the heart can obscure reason. Fight without quarter is necessary. But there are rules: resolution must combine strength with friendliness. Evil must be openly discredited. Don't gloss over your own shortcomings. Don't fight directly by force—you'll get entangled in hatred. Begin at home. Combat your own faults by making energetic progress in the good.

#40

XièDeliverance

The southwest furthers. If there's nowhere left you have to go, return brings good fortune. If something remains to be done, hasten brings good fortune. Tensions ease. Return to ordinary conditions as soon as possible. Don't overdo the triumph—don't push further than necessary. Handle residual matters quickly for a clean sweep. Like rain relieving atmospheric tension, deliverance has a liberating effect. But it's just beginning.
